YouTube plans Spotify for Music Videos service

According to Billboard, YouTube is reportedly working on so-called “premium on-demand music service”, which can be launched later this year. This option is expected to be mobile-focused and will allow users to listen for free or pay to get unlimited access to the full list of service’s tracks.

As Billboard noted, the both options either free or paid provide its users with the ability to use the music on YouTube any time they wish. The only difference is the ads presence. Billboard also suggests, that if YouTube goes the route of a premium service, it will provide the service with more flexibility in packaging and selling music. The service could also be integrated with other Google products in the future, including Google Glass. The premium service is also expected to bring the ability to stream full albums and cache music for offline listening.

The date of the launch has not been specified, but a number of music services, such as Spotify, Deezer, and Last.fm are already offering tons of music tracks via their online music libraries.

YouTube’s service is also rumored to be launched ahead of Beats Music, which is expected to debut later this year. YouTube has already had most of the licenses it is required to activate a music service, through its parent company Google’s All Access service, which debuted in May.

YouTube declined to comment on its music subscription plans, and just says that it had “nothing to announce at this time”. Meanwhile, one of YouTube spokesperson stated the following:

“We’re always working on new and better ways for people to enjoy YouTube content across all screens, and on giving partners more opportunities to reach their fans.”

With the new service, YouTube might compete against such service like Vevo, that features ads at the beginning of the music videos.

According to the source, the premium music service could see its launch when YouTube presents its redesigned mobile app that will provide users with “a simple, clean interface in which to listen to music, create custom playlists, and watch videos at the same time.”

Other companies are also working on music subscription services, including Beats Electronics, who is planning to launch its own service in the next few months.
